Thousands of Palestinian held at Netzarim Corridor
Introduction
As of January 26, 2025, thousands of Palestinians are being prevented from returning to their homes in northern Gaza due to a dispute over the ongoing ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
The Netzarim Corridor Situation
The Netzarim Corridor, a 6-7 km wide strip of land that bisects the Gaza Strip, has become a focal point of tension. Under the ceasefire agreement, Israel was supposed to begin allowing Palestinians to return to northern Gaza through this corridor on Saturday, January 25. However, Israel has blocked this movement, citing violations of the ceasefire terms by Hamas.
Reasons for the Blockade
Israel claims that Hamas has violated the agreement by:
Changing the order of hostage releases
Failing to release Arbel Yehoud, a female civilian hostage who was supposed to be freed before the four Israeli soldiers released on Saturday
Hamas, in turn, has accused Israel of violating the agreement and stated that Yehoud is alive and will be released next week.
Impact on Palestinians
Thousands of displaced Palestinians have gathered near the Netzarim Corridor, hoping to return to their homes in northern Gaza. Many have been waiting since Saturday, carrying their belongings and prepared to make the journey home.
Incidents of Violence
The situation has led to violence at the corridor:
Israeli forces reportedly fired on crowds on three occasions overnight and into Sunday
Two Palestinians were killed and nine wounded, including a child, according to Al-Awda Hospital
Israel’s military stated they fired warning shots at “several gatherings of dozens of suspects who were advancing toward the troops and posed a threat to them”
Ongoing Negotiations
Mediators from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar are working to address the dispute and facilitate the return of Palestinians to northern Gaza. The situation remains tense as both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.
