Transfer of Power to Mohammad Al-Bashir in Syria
Who is the new leader?
Mohammad al-Bashir is a Syrian engineer and politician, born in 1983 in the Jabal Zawiya region of Idlib. He currently serves as the Prime Minister of the Syrian Salvation Government, a position he assumed on January 13, 2024. Al-Bashir holds degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Aleppo and in Sharia law from the University of Idlib.
Before becoming prime minister, he was the Minister of Development and Humanitarian Affairs. His administration focuses on e-government initiatives, reducing real estate fees, and urban planning in Idlib.
Al-Bashir’s leadership comes amid significant political changes following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and aims to address stability and reconstruction in Syria’s opposition-held areas
What happens to HTS?
The transfer of power to Mohammed al-Bashir could significantly impact Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) operations in Syria. HTS may seek to consolidate control over newly liberated territories, potentially increasing its influence and recruitment capabilities. However, this shift could also provoke a military response from the Syrian government and its allies, particularly if HTS threatens strategic interests or destabilizes the region further. Additionally, HTS might need to integrate existing Syrian governmental structures to maintain stability, complicating its governance approach.
