India HMPV virus not from China- Update
Recent developments indicate that India’s current viral concerns are not directly linked to China’s ongoing respiratory illness surge.
HMPV cases in India
Two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) were recently detected in Bengaluru, India. These cases involved:
An 8-month-old male infant
A 3-month-old female infant
Both infants were admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru and are recovering. Importantly, neither child has a history of international travel, suggesting these infections are not connected to the reported surge in respiratory illnesses in China.
Indian Health Ministry’s statement
The Union Health Ministry has clarified that HMPV is already in global circulation, including in India. The ministry emphasized that cases of respiratory illnesses associated with HMPV have been reported in various countries, indicating that this is not a new or China-specific phenomenon.
Routine surveillance
These HMPV cases were detected during routine surveillance conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to monitor respiratory viral pathogens across the country. This suggests that India’s health authorities are actively monitoring for various respiratory illnesses, independent of the situation in China.
Historical context
It’s worth noting that India has faced its own viral outbreaks in the past, including Nipah virus infections in Kerala in 2018 and 2021. These outbreaks were not linked to China and demonstrate India’s experience in dealing with localized viral threats.
While there have been past speculations about the origins of viruses, including COVID-19, current evidence does not support claims of recent viral transmissions from China to India. The detected HMPV cases in India appear to be part of the normal circulation of respiratory viruses and are not directly connected to the current situation in China.
