Zelensky peace proposal to end war?
Introduction
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has recently suggested a potential path to end the “hot phase” of the war with Russia, centered around NATO membership for Ukraine. The key points of his proposal are:
NATO Membership for Unoccupied Ukraine
Zelensky proposes that NATO offer membership to the parts of Ukraine currently under Kyiv’s control.
This would provide immediate protection for unoccupied Ukrainian territory under the NATO “umbrella”.
Recognition of Ukraine’s Borders
The NATO invitation should recognize Ukraine’s internationally acknowledged borders, including currently occupied areas.
Ceasefire and Future Negotiations
This arrangement could lead to a ceasefire, ending the active phase of the conflict.
Zelensky suggests that occupied territories could be reclaimed later through diplomatic means.
Deterrence Against Future Aggression
The NATO membership would serve as a guarantee against future Russian aggression.
Caveats and Challenges
Zelensky acknowledges that no such offer has been made by NATO.
The likelihood of NATO considering this proposal remains doubtful.
Russia’s stance on Ukraine joining NATO continues to be a significant obstacle.
Conclusion
It’s important to note that this proposal represents a shift from Zelensky’s previous position of not ceding any territory to Russia. However, he emphasizes that this is not a formal plan but rather a potential approach to ending the conflict while ensuring Ukraine’s long-term security.
In our opinion, knowing Putin’s history he won’t agree to Zelensky’s proposal as Putin feels Trump has a better deal for Russia. Putin will wait. At this point Zelensky has only to loose a had not much to offer on negotiation table.
