Why Hamas want a cease fire deal now?

Introduction

Hamas is seeking a cease-fire now for several reasons. Most important its key ally Hezbollah is almost dismantled even with their leadership diminished.

Humanitarian Crisis

The ongoing conflict has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Over 44,280 people have been killed, and around 104,000 have been wounded. The majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced, many multiple times. Hamas likely wants to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population and allow for the entry of much-needed humanitarian aid.

Strategic Considerations

Regrouping and Rebuilding

A cease-fire would provide Hamas with an opportunity to regroup and potentially rebuild its military capabilities, which have been significantly damaged by Israeli operations.

Prisoner Exchange

Hamas has expressed willingness to engage in negotiations for a prisoner exchange. They have informed mediators in Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey of their readiness for a cease-fire agreement and a “serious deal” to exchange prisoners.

International Pressure

There is growing international pressure for a cease-fire, with many countries and organizations calling for an end to the hostilities. Hamas may be trying to capitalize on this sentiment to gain diplomatic leverage.

Negotiation Leverage

By agreeing to cease-fire terms, Hamas may be attempting to:

Secure the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel

Gain concessions from Israel, such as a withdrawal of forces from Gaza

Potentially improve its position in any future peace negotiations

Avoiding Further Losses

With the Israeli military continuing its operations in Gaza, Hamas may be seeking a cease-fire to prevent further losses of its personnel and infrastructure.

Conclusion

It’s important to note that while Hamas has expressed openness to a cease-fire, negotiations remain complex. The group has requested amendments to proposed deals, and there are still significant points of contention between Hamas and Israel regarding the terms of any potential agreement. At this point Hamas is not on a level playing field with having lost everything and upcoming transition in US government.

There is a possibility Netanyahu may agree for ceasefire and prisoner exchange due to pressure from US and Israeli opposition and citizens. Ceasefire at this point would also ease ICC further actions towards Israel leadership
