Hamas takeover of Fateh in Gaza?

Introduction

Hamas and Fateh has no reconciliation. Fateh controls part of West Bank under leadership of Mahmoud Abbas.

Hamas after Israeli attack have gone underground along with their leader Khalil Al-Hayya, who is based in Qatar, waiting to be expelled?

Hamas takeover of Gaza:

In June 2007, Hamas forcibly took control of the Gaza Strip from Fatah in a brief but violent conflict often referred to as the “Battle of Gaza” or “Gaza civil war”.

This followed Hamas’ victory in the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections.

Current status:

Fatah still exists and controls the Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs parts of the West Bank.

Hamas has ruled Gaza since 2007, though Israel’s recent military campaign has driven it underground.

Ongoing conflict:

The Fatah-Hamas conflict has been ongoing since 2006, with multiple failed attempts at reconciliation.

Recent developments:

In July 2024, Hamas and Fatah, along with 12 other Palestinian factions, signed a unity agreement in Beijing, China, aimed at forming a national unity government.

However, past reconciliation attempts have failed, and there is skepticism about the implementation of this latest agreement.

International context

Israel has stated it will not accept any Palestinian government that includes Hamas.

The United States and other Western countries have previously refused to accept a Palestinian government that includes Hamas unless it meets certain conditions.

Conclusion

Hamas did not “win” from Fatah in a traditional sense, but rather took control of Gaza by force in 2007. Fatah continues to exist and govern parts of the West Bank, while Hamas has controlled Gaza since 2007. The conflict between the two factions remains unresolved, despite recent attempts at reconciliation
