How Knowledge of ADHD Helps in the Success or Failure of the Education System

Sir Ken Robinson is a leading education expert who has delivered numerous TED talks, which include ADHD. According to him, the traditional education system has failed children particularly the ADHD ones around the world. He added that the rises in cases of ADHD are attributed to two things. One is that the traditional education system continuously fails to keep students interested in learning. The other one is a factor he termed “medical fashion”. He generalized that ADHD as a condition is a “fictitious epidemic”.   There had been numerous efforts and campaigns to shed light to ADHD as a condition that is manageable and is actually not something that should be recognized as a problem. However, there is a need to reach out to millions and make them aware about the condition. Below is a brief discussion to help us understand ADHD cases better.

ADHD Becoming More Common Today

ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition that affects kids and teenagers, which may continue until they become adults. It is a mental disorder that is among the most commonly diagnosed in children. Usually, individuals with the condition are unable to control impulses and are hyperactive. They also fin difficult to pay attention, for example, in what the teacher is saying in class. That is why children and teenagers diagnosed with ADHD have unusual behavior at school and at home.   One major reason that contributes to the rise in number of ADHD cases is the significant changes in the education system. Several decades ago, a lot of games, physical activities, integration of arts and music and creative plays are always integrated in the learning process of students. Today, however, there are less of these creative and physically challenging activities. The primary reason is to give way for educational programs that are more stringent. This is very opposed to what ADHD individuals are. It suppresses their feelings and energy even more. Thus, Robinson concluded that the education system is failing students all over the world.

ADHD and Students Growth

Being knowledgeable about whether or not a student has ADHD is crucial in his or her learning growth. If a student has the condition but is not diagnosed, there is a high probability that he or she will have stunt learning growth. This is because of the kind of more stringent education system in general today. On the other hand, students that are diagnosed with the condition can have the opportunity to learn successfully and, consequently, have positive overall learning growth. Today, the numerous research works and studies about the condition have led to its easy recognition.  When identified as ADHD, schools can design a curriculum that best fits their characteristics. Logically, their programs shall include activities that can help them release their energies and teach them to slowly control their hyperactive behavior. Some common example includes activities that help them release their creativity. These could be color games and activities and others.

Healthcare Reforms to Eradicate ADHD

There have been case studies about the reforms needed in the healthcare system to address the growing number of ADHD cases. One good example is “Healthcare reform, quality, and technology: ADHD as a case study”, which was conducted by Baum, Epstein, and Kelleher. Studies such as this have resulted to a significant change in the approach of addressing ADHD cases. Today, there are now numerous technologies and mechanisms to recognize and manage the condition.   Over the years, there have been positive developments in the way people see ADHD people and how the condition is addressed. People are now more informed and are now open-minded about living a happy life in a world where ADHD people exists.
